Tom Sykes took a memorable double home win at the Donington Park World Superbike round, as he turned the tables on his Kawasaki Racing team-mate Jonathan Rea, who has so far dominated the series. Kenan Sofuoglu was again triumphant in the Supersport class to extend his series lead whilst there were ‘green’ podiums aplenty at the Motocross World Championship also held in the UK.
Sykes looked in fantastic form throughout the weekend, taking pole position, two race wins and a new lap record. Crucially his recent run of good form has put him the series standings, so he now sits just one point behind second place.
Sykes and Rea had a spectacular battle in front of their British fans in race one with the 2013 Champion taking the chequered flag in deserved style. Rea then had a massive moment in the second race, putting him way down the order, before he scythed through the pack to take the runner-up slot again, for another Kawasaki 1-2. Rea now sits at the top of the standings with a massive 101 point advantage.
In the Supersport division Kenan Sofuoglu eased his Kawasaki Ninja ZX-6R to a comfortable win, giving him an impressive 45 point series lead. His Kawasaki Puccetti Racing team-mate and fellow Turkish countryman Toprak Razgatlioglu did not race at the event as it is not visited by the FIM European Superstock 600cc Championship but he remains unbeaten and a recognised star of the future.
Just two hour’s drive away, the seventh round of the FIM Motocross World Championship was being held in southern England at Matterley Basin near Winchester. The popular event is the brainchild of Steve Dixon, who also owns the Monster Energy DRT Kawasaki squad. Dixon had a particularly exciting day as thousands of fans cheered on his young English rider Max Anstie who lead most of the opening MX2 race, before finishing third. Anstie finished sixth in race two whilst reigning MX2 Champion Jordi Tixier posted a 5-3 scorecard at the event.
The MX1 division is still missing US star Ryan Villopoto who is being treated for an injury and he was deputised at this round by Xavier Boog. Held alongside the main classes, the European Motocross Championship round saw a victory from Kawasaki mounted Darian Sanayei, a young American AMA rider visiting this event.
In the Women’s Motocross World Championship Livia Lancelot took a dominant double win on her Team One One Four Kawasaki. Lancelot was WMX champion in 2008 and is now leading the series again.
Kawasaki Racing Manager, Steve Guttridge, commented: “It is incredible to see yet another dominating WSBK Kawasaki 1-2 and great to see Tom really hit top form at his home round. Kenan seemed to heave everything under control and is a clear favourite for the Supersport class. It’s been a busy weekend for us with Britain holding the World Superbike and Motocross round on the same weekend and also great to see Livia showing her class in the exciting Women’s MX series.”
